Gulika has no part in this combination. Gulika — also called Mandi, and treated by Parashara as one and the same, “not different” — is a genuine upagraha, a calculated shadow point regarded as Saturn’s son and carrying Saturn’s weight in concentrated form. It is a real technique and it belongs in a chart reading. It simply is not what defines Indra Yoga.
The practical consequence of the wrong definition is that it is far too easy to satisfy. Malefics interacting with a shadow point occurs constantly; a mutual exchange between two specific house lords with the Moon in a specific house does not. A reader following the old page would conclude they had a rare yoga of fame on evidence that means nothing.
Why the exchange is the whole of it
A parivartana — mutual exchange — is a strong link because each lord is sitting in the other’s house, so neither can be read without the other. The fifth house carries intelligence, creative capacity and inherited merit; the eleventh carries gains, networks and things achieved. Exchanging their lords ties capability directly to return.
