Vidaal Yoga in Astrology

What Is Vidaal Yoga in Panchang?

Quick answer

Vidaal Yoga is a panchanga day-yoga derived from the relationship between the Sun's nakshatra and the Moon's, paired with Aadal. Both are tatkalika yogas: timing avoidances for beginning certain kinds of work on a given day. Neither says anything about a person's temperament.

Vidaal Yoga is an item in the panchanga — a property of a day, derived from the relationship between the Sun’s nakshatra and the Moon’s. Together with its counterpart Aadal Yoga it belongs to the tatkalika group, the day-yogas formed from combinations of weekday and nakshatra, and both are listed among the periods in which certain undertakings are avoided.

It has nothing to do with temperament, and it is not read from a birth chart the way a chart yoga is. The earlier version of this page said Vidaal Yoga “determines a person’s temperament based on their birth yoga” and then never gave a definition at all across fifteen hundred words. Both problems are fixed below.

Two kinds of yoga in a panchanga

The word yoga does more than one job in the almanac, which is the root of most confusion on this subject.

  • Naisargika yogas — the 27 nitya yogas, computed from the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes. One is always running, and it is one of the five limbs of the panchanga.
  • Tatkalika yogas — occasional combinations formed by weekday, tithi and nakshatra falling together in particular ways. These do not run continuously; they occur when the ingredients happen to coincide. Aadal and Vidaal belong here, as do the better-known Sarvartha Siddhi, Amrit Siddhi and Tripushkar yogas.

So Vidaal is a real entry in a real system. It is simply in a different part of it from where the old page looked.

How it is derived

Both Aadal and Vidaal are counted from the Sun’s nakshatra to the Moon’s. For Aadal, one commonly published rule counts the Moon’s nakshatra as the 2nd, 7th, 9th, 14th, 16th, 21st, 23rd or 28th from the Sun’s, taking Abhijit into the count — and its guidance is to avoid military undertakings, agricultural work and work in stone.

Vidaal is its paired counterpart, derived the same way from a different set of counts. Published sources do not agree on the exact list, and this site was not able to verify a single authoritative version — which is worth saying plainly rather than picking one and presenting it as settled. A panchanga computes it directly, and that is the reliable way to read it.

The Abhijit detail is not trivial, incidentally. Abhijit is the twenty-eighth nakshatra, a short segment overlapping Uttara Ashadha and Shravana, excluded from the standard 27 but counted in some calculations. Whether it is included changes the result.

What it is for

Timing, and only timing. Aadal and Vidaal appear in a panchanga alongside the other day-yogas so that someone choosing a date can see what the day carries. They are avoidances of moderate weight, in the same register as the nine unfavourable nitya yogas — guidance about when not to begin particular kinds of work.

They say nothing about anyone’s character. If you were born on a day carrying Vidaal Yoga, that is a fact about the almanac for that date, shared with everyone else born that day. It is not a reading of you.

How to find it

Read a panchanga for the date and place you care about and look at the day-yoga entries, which are listed separately from the running nitya yoga. Most published panchangas show Aadal and Vidaal when they occur and omit them when they do not.

Common questions

What is Vidaal Yoga in panchang?

A day-yoga formed from the relationship between the Sun’s and Moon’s nakshatras, treated as unfavourable for beginning certain kinds of work. It is a timing indication, not a personality indication.

Is Vidaal Yoga the same as the nitya yoga?

No. The nitya yogas are the 27 continuous divisions of the Sun and Moon’s combined longitude, one of which is always active. Vidaal is an occasional combination that appears only on some days.

Is Vidaal Yoga bad?

It is an avoidance for particular undertakings on a particular day. That is the whole of the claim, and it does not extend to a life. More definitions are collected in the astrology guides.

What is Aadal Yoga?

Vidaal’s counterpart, derived the same way and carrying the same kind of caution — commonly given as unsuitable for military, agricultural and stone work.

Where a page states something factual about sleep or psychology, it names the study or researcher behind it.
