What Is Sadhya Yoga in Astrology? (22nd Nitya Yoga)
Quick answer
Sadhya is the 22nd nitya yoga, spanning 280°00′ to 293°20′ of the combined Sun–Moon longitude, presided over by Savitri and counted favourable. The name means that which can be accomplished, which is why muhurta chooses it for undertakings meant to be completed and for charitable giving.
Sadhya is the twenty-second of the 27 nitya yogas, running from 280°00′ to 293°20′ of the Sun and Moon’s combined sidereal longitude. Its presiding deity is Savitri, and it is counted among the favourable yogas. The name is the most useful thing about it: sādhya means that which can be accomplished.
What the name is doing
Sādhya is formed from the root sādh, to accomplish or bring to completion, in the form that means “to be accomplished” — achievable, attainable, capable of being carried off. It is the same root behind sādhana, disciplined practice, and sādhaka, the one who practises.
That is why the yoga has the muhurta reputation it does. Sadhya is chosen for undertakings meant to be completed rather than merely begun, and it is conventionally regarded as a good period for charitable giving and for auspicious events generally. The tradition is reading the word, which is a normal and old technique in Jyotish — but it is worth knowing that this is what is happening, because it tells you the claim is derived from language rather than observed in charts.
How to find it
Add the Sun’s sidereal longitude to the Moon’s and divide by 13°20′. Sadhya is the twenty-second arc, so a combined longitude between 280°00′ and 293°20′ produces it. Easier still, read the yoga entry in a panchanga for your date, time and place of birth. The full table of the 27 gives the rest.
Note that it is the sum of the two longitudes. The difference between them gives the tithi. The earlier version of this page called the nitya yogas “combinations of the Sun and the Moon based on constellations”, which conflates them with the nakshatras; the 27 nitya yogas are not the 27 nakshatras and have no correspondence to them.
Two corrections to what this page used to say
There are no zodiac-sign predictions for a nitya yoga. This page previously carried twelve of them, one for each sign from Aries to Pisces. They cannot exist. A nitya yoga is a property of the day, running about 21 to 25 hours, and everyone born anywhere on earth in that window has the same one — Aries and Pisces natives alike. There is no mechanism by which it could produce twelve different readings, and the twelve that were here were invented. They have been removed.
Parijata and Visha are not nitya yogas. The old page offered four “examples of Nitya Yogas”: Vyaghata, Parijata, Visha and Ganda. Vyaghata is the thirteenth and Ganda the tenth, but the other two belong to a different category entirely — they are chart yogas, formed by planets sitting in particular houses and signs. The 27 nitya yogas are a closed list, and anything not on it is not one.
The natal attributions
The birth-yoga literature reads the nitya yoga of the day you were born. For Sadhya the usual attributions are determination, patience for the results of one’s own work, considered decision-making, diplomacy and a soft-spoken manner. Some lists add a fondness for cleanliness and pleasant scents. These are the tradition’s claims, and they follow the name closely: the temperament described is the one that finishes things.
The bound on all of it is the same as for every yoga in this family. Roughly one person in twenty-seven is born under Sadhya. A factor at that resolution is a tint on the day, not a personality, and it should be read after the lagna, the Moon’s nakshatra and the actual condition of the planets — the same order set out for Shukla and Shobhana.
On remedies
The older version of this page said that worshipping Shiva “can enhance the benefits of Sadhya Yoga”. Presented that way it describes a mechanism, and there is no evidence for one.
What can honestly be said is narrower. The tradition prescribes worship and charity in association with favourable yogas, and Sadhya in particular is linked with giving. Charity is the one remedy whose value does not depend on the astrology being correct — the money reaches someone either way. That is a better reason to act on it than an expected return.
Common questions
Is Sadhya Yoga good or bad?
Favourable. It is not among the nine nitya yogas avoided for beginnings, and it is conventionally chosen for auspicious events and for charitable giving. That is a judgement about electing a time to act, not a forecast about a life.
What does Sadhya mean?
“To be accomplished” — achievable, attainable. From the root sādh, to bring to completion.
How do I know if I was born under Sadhya Yoga?
Look up a panchanga for your birth date, time and place and read the yoga entry. Do not derive it from your nakshatra or your sun sign; neither is related to it.
What is Sadhya Yoga good for?
Finishing things rather than starting them, on the reading of its name, and charitable work. A muhurta practitioner weighs it with the tithi, nakshatra, karana and weekday before recommending a window. More definitions are collected in the astrology guides.
